Overview of Rhinoplasty

Correction of shape of nose is often required for

  • Cosmetic Purpose
  • Nasal deformity after Injury
  • Cleft lip nose deformity

As nose is at the center of face, it is cosmetically most important. Proper shape & size of nose gives cosmetically beautiful face with increased confidence. Depressed bridge of nose is corrected by cartilage taken from Chest Wall (Rib), Nasal Septum or Ear or Artificial Silicon Prosthesis is used.

Correction of rounded tip is called Tipplasty. It can be done alone or with correction of bridge. Tip is made sharper and height of tip is also increased.

Wide nasal base is also made narrower which gives cosmetically improved look.

In deformity following injury, the alignment of bony framework is restored and necessary corrections are made.

In Rhinoplasty incision line is placed inside nasal opening or over the Collumella. Hence they are well hidden, no external scar mark is visible. This is done either by local or general anesthesia. Patient is discharged on the same day or next day. The results obtained are permanent.

Cosmetic Purpose

Cosmetic correction of nose means correction of length of nose, depressed bridge of nose, wide tip and broad base of nose. All the mentioned defects can be corrected by cosmetic rhinoplasty by separate surgeries or together. Depressed bridge of nose is corrected by cartilage taken from nasal septum itself or ear cartilage or rib cartilage from the chest wall. Correction of wide nasal tip is called tipplasty, which is done by suturing alar cartilages together. Wide base is shortened by excision of wedge of skin and suturing. Short nose or long nose can be corrected by nasal framework rhinoplasty surgeries.

For correction of depressed bridge of nose in place of cartilage nowadays custom made silicone implants of different shape are available.

In all above mentioned nasal surgeries incision line is in hidden areas so that no scar line is visible from outside.
