PLACES OF INTEREST

VICTORIA MEMORIAL

Built in 1912 with the white marble, in memory of Queen Victoria, is one of Calcutta's most beautiful monumental legacies from the Raj. The Prince of Wales inaugurated it. With beautiful garden grounds, the Victoria memorial houses a large bronze statue of the Queen Empress, besides paintings, Manu- scripts and other objects of historic values in its Museum and Art Gallery.

 

VIDYASAGAR SETU

The modern engineering marvel is the largest cable stayed bridge in Asia, inaugurated in the year of 1992.This is the 2nd bridge connects the twin cities of Calcutta and Howrah.

 

THE BIRLA PLANETARIUM

One of the largest in Asia, near to Victoria Memorial which will take us to the astraunical tour with the help of a gigantic planetarium projector accessories comprise of 29,000 parts and combine to portray on the inner ceiling of the planetarium. Stars, planets and heavenly bodies come into view as the background lecture explains and guides.

 

ZOOLOGICAL GARDENS

The oldest and biggest zoo in India is the Calcutta's main interesting spot. The Prince of Wales opened it on January 1st 1876. The huge 16-hectare grounds house a wide species of animals & birds including the rare white Bengal Tigers

 

NATIONAL LIBRARY

One of the largest library in the country, housed here, a collection of more than one million books. It also has the rarest collection of very rare manuscripts, which is of very high historical value.

 

 

B.B.D.BAG

Dalhousie Square, the seat of administration of British India, is renamed after Three Martyrs of Bengal Binoy, Badal & Dinesh. On the Southern side of the square is the Raj Bhavan, built in Georgian style of architecture. Close by, is the Assembly House, a unique specimen of Gothic architecture and St. John's Church, the oldest church in Calcutta where lies mausoleum of Job Charnok, the founder of the city. The Writer’s building, Grandiose Gothic architecture and the hub of governmental affairs occupy the entire north.  

 

 

HIGH COURT

Built by Walter Granville in 1872 in Gothic Style is one of the oldest courts in India is the landmark of Calcutta. The court also has a tower, which stands 60 meters tall.

 

 

 

EDEN GARDENS

It was built in 1840.This stadium can accommodator 1 lakhs people. An artificial lake adjacent to it attracts tourists. The beautiful Burmese-Style pagoda, which was brought from Burma after the British victory in the Burmese, was of 1884 adds more attraction to this picnic spot.

 

 

INDIAN MUSEUM

The museum, which built in 1875,stands the largest in the country. The mummy is a special attraction for visitors to the museum. It houses rare antiques, ornaments, a amour, fossils, stones, paintings of Mughal India, animal skeleton, mummies etc.

 

HOWRAH BRIDGE

The engineering marvel was built in the 1940s,now so much part of the city, that Calcutta would be inconceivable without it. The huge cantilever bridge strung on two 196 feet high pillars connects Calcutta with Howrah and is used by laces of vehicles daily.

 

CALCUTTA RACE COURSE

Built in 1820s,Calcutta Race Course is one of the largest racecourses in the country. The most important races are Queen Elizabeth Cup & the Calcutta Derby.

 

NEW MARKETS

One of Calcutta's best shopping centres built in 1874 by Sir Stuart Hogg. Its red brick Gothic click tower bears testimony to past grandeur. Linen to cakes, fruit to fish, all & sundry is available in wide choice & price.

 

RABINDRA SADAN / NANDAN

Situated on the southeast corner of the maiden. Culture centre for film enthusiasts and professional, largely patronized by the late Satyajit ray, who inaugurated Nandan it has three motion picture theatres with the best screening facilities.  

 

 

GENERAL POST OFFICE

The GPO is situated in a building of architectural interest at B.B.D.Bag Area. This is the main Post office of Calcutta, which controls the entire postal system of Calcutta.

 

METRO RAILWAY

India's first and only underground Railway is the crown of the City. It connects Tollygunge, the southern end of the city and Dumdum, the northern end of the city. It covers 16 Km distance divided into 17 Stations with only 33 minutes.

 

SHAHEED MINAR

This 165 Ft. High monument was erected by public subscription in 1828. More recently, it has been named "Shaheed Minar" to honour the martyrs of the freedom struggle. An important landmark in Calcutta, it is located at the Northern end of the Maiden. 

 

BIRLA INDUSTRIAL & TECHNOLOGICAL MUSEUM

A Place for students interested in practically experiencing their scientific knowledge. Located at the crossing of Syed Amir Ali Avenue and Gurusaday road. The museum deals with basic science and technology. It has a large number of exhibits, designed, prepared and fabricated at its own workshop.

 

BIRLA MANDIR

The Largest addition to the places of visit in Calcutta, built over twenty-two years of painstaking labour, it is an all-marble structure with very high quality Rajasthani engravings.

 

NALBAN

Situated at Salt Lake City, adjacent to Nicco Park. Away from central Calcutta, Nalban is a beautiful picnic spot for families who want to spend few hours in the quite greenery, tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the city life.

 

RABINDRA SAROBAR

The beautiful lakes and greenery has been developed to give Calcutta a lovely picnic option. The palm trees along the banks add to the beauty of the place. A public swimming pool and a Japanese Buddhist temple are almost the other attractions by the lakeside.

 

NICCO PARK (JHEEL MEEL)

Its situated at Salt Lake. The amusement park is the Disneyland of West Bengal, with a variety of unusual games and rides.

 

WRITER'S BUILDING

The British, situated at the northern end of Dalhousie Square, built it in 1880s; it now houses the Secretariat of the West Bengal Government.

 

KALI TEMPLE AT KALIGHAT

Great attraction for Hindu Pilgrims, the temple is located at Kalighat in South Calcutta.

 

THE BOTANICAL GARDEN

This lovely, Asia’s largest and second largest in the world, 273 acre park of lawns and woods, on the western bank of Hoogly, was founded in 1787 by Col. Alexander Kyd of the East India Company. There are more than 30,000 varieties of trees and plants, including the famous banyan tree. This 200-year-old Banyan tree, the world's largest, has a circumference of 330m. The 600 roots from the tree reach for the ground in low, sinewy, twisting lengths.

 

BELUR MATH

Founded by Swami Vivekanand, the world famous yogi and disciple of Sri Ramkrishna Paramhansa,it is the Headquarters of the Ramkrishna Math and Mission. The hall with the statue of Ramkrishna Paramhansa,it is the main prayer hall. It is located at Belur, Howrah.

 

ST. PAUL'S CATHEDRAL

The Anglican Cathedral of Calcutta built in 1847,adjacent to the Birla Planetarium. It towers 65m high.

 

 

SCIENCE CITY

It is located on Calcutta’s eastern metropolitan bypass. A visit to it's space theatre is a thrilling experience. Its space threat conducts two different types of shows.
