To the world, Rabindranath Tagore's recognition was admitted through his poetic brilliance. His reputation as a music composer occurred at a later time. From his early days, the musical genius in him had not only mingled with his poetic brilliance, but had great influence on his personality also, Tagore said "My poems without their melodies are like butterflies without their wings". The poem and the tune interweaves each other in his song. According to him the Music is always to interpret the poetry. His music perfectly succeeds in this wedding. Where ends the pursuit of words, there commences the invocations, the extension of tune, the music. The variety in Tagore songs is astonishing. While a large number of his songs were based on Indian classical music, he also did a lot of experiment with western tunes. Likewise his many songs are based on our devotional tunes and folk tunes. Tagore himself believed that among all his creations, his songs will be ever lasting. His music reels in romance with nature. His music has no restriction, no domain. It is free and it extends the feeling of beauty and joy beyond the limits of verses to the expanse of universe.
This great son of Bengal was a poet , a painter, a
philosopher, a novelist, an educatonist, an actor, a musician, a
cultural leader, (the list is endless), but above all he was a patriot.
Rabindranath was born at Jorasanko in Calcutta on 6th May 1861. He was
the son of Maharshi Debandranath Tagore, the eminent leader of the
Brahmo Samaj. He began writing from his very childhood. In 1913, he
recieved the Noble Prize for Literature, primarily because of his book
"Gitanjali" - which won him everlasting fame. He became the
first Indian / Asian to recieve this award. He had endless love for his
country & countrymen. Tagore refused and rejected his
"Knighthood" in 1919, against the Jallianwallabagh Massacre.
Being a great patriot, he composed hundreds of songs which can be sung
in martial tunes. He gave us "Jana Gana Mana" - Our National
Anthem. Rabindranath is no more with us , but his ideas & ideals
will continue to inspire & encourage all Indians forever. |
