
Nilanjana
is one of the few female representatives of the gwalior gharana
of this generation. Born in Chandannagar, near Kolkata, her
Traning in vocal music began at home, where she learnt from
her mother, Jayanti Roy. Later, she migrated to Kolkata to pursue
training in Hindustani vocal music from her uncle, Sri Kumar
Roy of the Kirana Gharana.
After years of traning, which built a firm foundation, she
became a disciple of one of India’s most distinguished
performers and gurus, Pt. Ulhas Kashalkar of the gwalior gayaki.
She became a scholar at the much covered ITC SANGEET RESEARCH
ACADEMY, a-one-of-its kind school of music, a gurukul of sorts
and a place which every young student of music and musician
aspires to being a part of.
Nilanjana
began her performing career with her performance at the Eastern
Zonal Cultural Council, Government of West Bengal, Kolkata
(2003), This was followed by a slow of performances across
the country including the Gunijaan Baithak, Mumbai (2005),
The ITC sangeet Sammelans at Raipur (2004), Kolkata(2005),
Kanpur, Lucknow and Hyderabad (2006). Her performance at the
prestigious All Bengal Music Conference, Kolkata (2007) was
highly acclaimed by Listeners and critics alike.
The Ministry of Culture, Government of India awarded Nilanjana
the National Scholarship for Hindustani Vocal Music in recognition
of her talent and promise. Blessed with a sweet and powerful
voice, and armed with taleem of the highest quality, Nilanjana
is hailed as one of India’s most promising young vocalists.
