Binata Roy Chowdhury was born in Kolkata. She started her academic career from Bethune School, graduated from Presidency College and completed her Post graduation and PhD from Calcutta University. Her father Late Monindra Nath , an advocate , encourage his daughter to be an author and Binata’s mother keenly desired an independent career for her. Binata tried to live up to her parents’ expectation. She is married into a renowned joint family of Kolkata. Her husband is an eminent businessman. She spends her merry hours mostly with her only daughter.
A distinguished novelist , short story writer, essayist and poet Binata maintains a perfect balance between her profession (Associate Professor in Bengali Dept. of Bijoy Krishna Girls’ College, Howrah ) family and writing .
Optimist Binata’s writings are grounded in a compassionate humanism and celebrate the subtle humour and philosophy of life .The character and scenes are imbued with a haunting realism, shows considerable diversity of content, from and style, and range from fantasy to realism and from tragedy to comedy.
Her brilliance was recognised in 1997 when she got “SADHANA BHATTACHARYA SMRITI GABESAK SAMMANONA”, for her most coveted work ‘PANCHASER MANWANTAR O BANGLA SAHITYA ‘, given by Kolkata Little Magazine Library O Gabesana Kendra, HINDOLI SAHITYA PUROSKAR for short stories in 2007, ASHAPURNA DEVI SHATOBARSHIKI ROUPYA SMARAK in 2009 and most ‘PROMISSING AUTHOR AWARD’ –KOLKATA BOOK FAIR, organised by Publishers and Booksellers Guild in 2009.
In the year 2013 she received Bhibhuti Bushan Award for "Panchasti Galpo Smriti Puraskar". And also she was awarded Lila Prize by Calcutta University in the year 2018.
