From the beginning of civilization, Man has developed their life style with the help of 'SCIENCE'. In this cyclic advancement process, they have developed several types of 'INDUSTRIES', with the help of Scientific Technologies. Each & every industries is using our surrounding ENVIRONMENT and its NATURAL products and generating POLLUTANTS, which are some times equally harmful to our surrounding ENVIRONMENT & its ECOLOGY.
The modern ENVIRONMENT SCIENCE as a 'BALANCE' between modernization of industries & ecological system, with a target POLLUTION FREE INDUSTRY & THE SURROUNDING ENVIRONMENT
For this we have to maintain a proper check in Eco system & environment for future Mankind of our beloved world.

Activated Sludge Process: This process employs suspend growth treatment principle to achieve removal of organic substances in wastewater. The activated sludge process utilizes an active mass of flocculent microorganisms to convert organic material into simpler products.
PROCESS-FLOW DIAGRAM OF A TYPICAL ACTIVATED
SLUDGE PRCESS
Process Description: The essential units
employed in this treatment are aeration tank/s, secondary clarifier / settling tank and a return sludge line from secondary clarifier / settling tank to aeration tank and excess sludge wasting line. In this form of suspended growth treatment, initially the raw wastewater is given primary treatment in primary clarifier / settling tank to reduce the load on the main treatment unit i.e., aeration tank. Organic waste is then introduced into a reactor where an aerobic bacterial culture is maintained in suspension. The reactor contents are referred to as mixed liquor. Aerobic environment in the reactor is achieved by the use of diffused or mechanical aeration, which also serves to maintain the mixed liquor is a completely mixed regime.
After a specified period of agitation, the mixture of new & old cells is passed into a final clarifier / settling tank, where the cells or sludge are separated from the treated wastewater. From the secondary clarifier / settling tank, fraction of settled cells / sludge is recycled with or without intermediate settling to maintain the concentration of microbial floe in the reactor. This part is termed as "return sludge". After steady state is reached in reactor, the remaining sludge wasted. |
