Rangapat is a committed & Full-time, purely Theatre group with all round activities as :

(i) Theatre production - to convert the conception & inagination into performance on the stage.
(ii) Magazine & publication - to multiply the sense & wisdom of Theatre.
(iii) Workshops & Seminar - to cultivate the theories & practices of Dramatics.
(iv) Festival & Felicitation - to popularise Theatre & to glorify veteran Theatre activists.
(v) Playwriting competition - to adore & encourage young writers.
(vi) 'Theatorch' - to enlighten school & downtrodden children with continuing Theatre awareness programmes .
(vii) Benevolent activities - to stand beside the distressed for medical & social causes.

Theatre production :

CURRENT Production :

  • ‘TATHAGATA’: A full length Bengali play written by legendary play-wright Sri Mohit Chattopadhyay, based on the life and preachings of Goutam Buddha, through a long and truthful research. The play will be probably the first of its kind on Indian stage and will involve almost 50 artistes and 30 background crews. The play is likely to be acted by some renowned actors & actresses of Bengali stage like Debsankar Halder- Senjuti Mukherjee- Swapankumar - Sanjib Sarkar - Biswanath Mukherjee & Kamal Brahma and the production is being designed & directed by Dr. Tapanjyoti Das, assisted by Joy Sen (Light design) - Sanchayan Ghosh (Stage craft) - Deb Chowdhury (Music composition) - Md. Ali (Make-up design) & others. This play has been selected to receive Grant from Ministry of Culture, Govt. of India and expected to achieve high applause worldwide for its text-texture & grandeur.

  • ‘Aurangzeb’ : A Bengali full-length (two hours & thirty minutes) Historial play, researched & written by Mohit Chattopadhyay, inspired from a Tamil play of Prof. Indira Parthasarathy & directed by Harimadhab Mukhopadhyay. They are all National Sangeet Natak Awardee in different years. This production has been assisted financially by National Sangeet Natak Akademi, New Delhi. The production has attained a highest peak of success, being appreciated by critics & audience all over the country and had been invited to all state level & some national level Festivals including ‘Bharat Rang Mahotsav 2009’ at New Delhi & Lucknow organised by National School of Drama, Govt. of India. The Production is made up with fifty one artistes and activists including a handful of reputed performers like Debsankar Halder, Bijoylakshmi Barman, Rwita Dutta Chakraborty, Swapan Kumar, Biswanath Mukherjee, Dr. Tapanjyoti Das & Harimadhab Mukhopadhyay himself. The extravaganza of Set-Light-Music-Costume-Make up were created by Sanchayan Ghosh-Joy Sen-Deb Chowdhury-Susanta Pal-Md.Ali respectively. It is marching towards century performance. This play has been Rewarded as the Best Production with 'Bengal Shrachi Tripti Mitra Samman' for the year 2009-10 and won the Best production award by Paschim Banga Natya Academy for 2009. It has been already adorded as a milestone production the Bengali Theatre had ever with its contents & creation.

  • ‘Tusher Agun’ : This is another full length ( of two hours duration) Bengali play, adopted from a political sattire of Slawomir Mrozek, by Prof. Mohit Chattopadhyay & directed by Dipak Das (Editting & production design by Dr. Tapanjyoti Das, Art & stage craft by Samir Aich, Song & music by Deb Chowdhury and Rope choreography by Debkumar Pal). This production has also been highly popular and selected in various state level Festivals. Biswanath Mukherjee, Satyapriya Sarkar, Dipak Das, Chaitali Chakraborty, Kamal Brahma, Rachana Mitra, Kajal Dasgupta, Chandra Deb, Chaitali Ghosh & Dr. Tapanjyoti Das acted in different times with high appreciations.
  • ‘Jhum Jhumi’ : This is a fantasy play, full length (Two hours & ten minutes) and Bengali, written by Rajat Ghosh based on a story of legendary novelist Parashuram and directed by Biplanu Maitra. This production is made up with almost 35 people, Artistes & Technicians. This play is full of fun and highly enjoyed by the audience. It is acted by the younger & promising actors & actresses of Rangapat like Kamal Brahma, Kasturi Goswami, Papiya Bannerjee, Mithun Roy & Sangita Roy.

  • ‘Jyotsnar Kathamala’ : Though very old and our first production, this play is still on shows because of its unique experimental forms with live painting-music-mime-dance-poetry & Theatre. The play is composed & designed by Biplanu Maitra and participated by Painters of fame like Samir Aich- Sunil Das & others.

  • ‘MUKTA-DHARA’ : This a workshop based production of Tagore’s play to commemorate the 150th Birth Anniversary of Rabindranath is produced as a outcome of ‘THEATORCH’ 2009-10, a theatre awareness project and made up with 56 school children assembled and trained at Bahala Bratachari Bidyashram, Kolkata through October 2009 to March 2010.
 
 
 

MAGAZINE & PUBLICATIONS :

  • Rangapat Natyapatra : It is our Annual & Bi-lingual Theatre periodical published on our foundation day every year since 2004 with 7 issues so far. Respected Mohit Chattopadhyay acts as Editting advisor, Smt. Sunanda Mukhopadhyay being the editor with editting assistance from Sucharita & Sanjib Chattopadhyay and Samir Aich & Tapas Konar being the artiste-designer-Research on life & works of great play-wrights & thespians are carried out & published every year as its prime supplements, as for example: Mohit Chattopadhyay (2005), Badal Sarkar (2006), Manoj Mitra (2007), Utpal Dutta (2008), Habib Tanvir (2009), Sisir Bhaduri (2010) & Ajitesh Bandyopadhyay (proposed in 2011). Besides, regular section of long & short plays-articles-news & photographs, an unique feature of this magazine is the Drawings of renowned painters of whom respected Jogen Chowdhury-Prakash Karmakar-Sunil Das-Suhas Roy are mentionworthy. This publication has received recent assistance from Sangeet Natak Akademi, New Delhi.

  • Hridayer theke valo basobhumi nei : This is a complete volume of biography and theatre works of legendary play-wright, Sri Mohit Chattopadhyay, till date, published in 2009. Revision and updatation is in progress. This book is researched & authored by Kamal Saha assisted by Dr. Tapanjyoti Das, which is priceless to the theatre researchers. This is primarily published in Bengali.

  • Debsankar Natyamela Smaranika Sankalan : The collection of Bengali write ups & discussion on Debsankar Halder’s acting & works by important theatre critics and oracles has been published during his retrospective festival organised by Rangapat in 2010. Shankha Ghosh-Sunil Gangopadhyay-Amzad Ali Khan- Rudra Prasad Sengupta-Bivas Chakraborty-Mohit Chattopadhyay are among the praisworthy columnists.

  • Future publications : Rangapat has set up its own publication unit and a separate Research team since early 2010 for the magazine & other publications whcih work throughout the year. We have plans to publish :
    • complete volume of plays by Mohit Chattopadhyay, to be compiled & editted by Samik Bandyopadhyay, nationally renowned theatre-theorititian
    • Life & works of Badal Sarkar to be compiled by Kamal Saha, well known theatre scholar
    • Life & works of Bijan Bhattacharya, and so many.

WORKSHOPS & SEMINARS:

Rangapat organises the both as the prime part of its continuing Theatre education for the in-house & out-sider theatre internees. All the well-versed theatre gurus take part as teachers & speakers. The seminars are dedicated to a legendary Actor-Director-Dramatist as ‘Jnanesh Mukhopadhyay Smarak Natya Kathanmala’ which usually take place at least twice a year.

Since mid of 2009 Rangapat has started a theatre awareness programme for the school childern in the name of ‘THEATORCH’ with the help of ministry of culture, Govt. of India. Expanding Awareness for theatre, spotting out theatre talents, upliftment of theatre technics and social awarenes on different essential issues through Theatre — all will be in the activities under this scheme and will be continued in the years to come.

FELICITATIONS :
Rangapat offers felicitations to the veteran Theatre thespians and activists to pay them honour for their contributions to the upbringing of Theatre, as well as also to the young promising Theatre actors-activists to encourage them to propagate Theatre as a whole. Since 2006 we have introduced a Lifetime Theatre achievement Award in the memory of the legendary Light designer of the country, as Tapas Sen Smriti Natya Sammanana and the receipients so far are :

  • Ramaprasad Banik (2006),
  • Subrata Pal (2007)
  • Harimadhab Mukhopadhyay (2008)
  • Rudraprasad Sengupta (2009) &
  • Bivas Chakraborty (2010).
 

We also organise Play-writting competition since 2005 for the young & promising Dramatists in Bengali with handsome financial award.

FESTIVALS & CELEBRATIONS :

  • Anniversary celebration : It takes place every year on the day of Mahalaya, the foundation day of Rangapat, at Academy of Fine Arts Auditorium with presentations of own & invited plays, seminars, publication & felicitations.

  • Mohit 75 : It was an observation of 75th Birthday of living legend play-wright Mohit Chattopadhyay started on 31st May 2009 at Academy of Fine Arts and ended on 1st June 2010 at Jibananda Savaghar with a series of seminars in two phases, discussions, documentary film, presenting plays and felicitation.

  • Debsankar Natyamela : It is an Actor’s Retrospective sort of theatre festival, probably maiden of its kind in the theatre world. Nine plays in a cluster during seven days acted by Debsankar Halder, the young popular icon & actor of this generation, in the central character, were presented through 16th to 22nd April 2010 at Academy of Fine Arts. Exhibition-publication-felicitation and offering social aid, were all the parts of the festival. The objective was not only to entertain the audience with a wide range of acting by one of the everbest Bengali actor, but also to exhibit the ABCD of stage acting to the young Theatre-internees (hence named ‘Abhinoyer Barnomala’, the Actor’s alphabet). The entire profit money were contributed as :
    • to adore and award Debsankar Halder to inspire his struggle in life and his strength on stage, with a lifetime reward of Rs. 51,000/- only
    • to felicitate Sri Khaled Chowdhury, the legedary stage designer of Indian stage, with an honorium of Rs. 1,01,000/- only for his art works
    • to provide financial aid of Rs. 45,000/- only for treatment to 3 ailing children suffering from Blood cancer
    • to afford contibution of Rs. 51,000/- only to the West Bengal Liver Foundation, constituted for the research and treatment of lethal liver diseases. In this way we have served cultural & social causes at the same time through a festival. This unique initiatives were sopported hugely by Sharda Group of Companies and two great theatre lover, veteran Subrata Pal & film-maker Goutam Halder. Theatre patrons from all over the country and abroad too, extended financial & other co-operations.

  • Future programmes : We dream to afford such festivals every year to focus the spectrum of creativity of a Theatre performer or designer through a retrospective series. At the same time we will render our social commitments with the monetary profit from this grand happenings.

HUMANITARIAN ACTIVITIES :

Rangapat since its inception always stands beside the ailing people of the society and the distressed theatre activists. So we offered financial aids to Dipak Das-Manab Ghosh-Chandan Roy Chowdhury for their life-saving treatment, to the family of late Goutam Bannerjee-late Anit Chandra Pal-late Sambhu Bannerjee-late Arun Das, to the street children-thalassaemia kids-children of sex workers-Tsunami & Ayela victims in different occassions, apart from multiple benevolent activities during Debsankar Natyamela.
