Her
induction to music started when she was five, under her mother's
watchful guidance and by seven, she won her first age group
competition in Howrah. This wining streak continued in various
age group competitions. Soon she found herself guided into
serious classical training under the watchful eyes of Brajagopal
Ganguly out of sheer passion & to gain further perfection.
In 1977, she won the All Bengal Music Competiton arranged
by Howrah Ramkrishna Athletic Club, and she also attained
the Sangeet Prabhakar degree in 1980. Along with her studies
where she later graduated both in Arts & Music from Calcutta
University, she increased her trainings under stalwarts like
Maya Sen, Purba Dam, Purabi Dutta, Prasad Sen and Nisit Sadhu.
Having successfully joined the Yuvabani with A.I.R.
in 1982 & later Yuvagajat
with Doordarshan, Calcutta, her public performances increased
in Howrah & Calcutta. She came to the limelight
during Rabindra Sangeet Sammelan and thereafter started performing in major events like the
Rabindra Janmotsav meetsof Rabindra Bharati Society &
University, Govt. of West Bengal programes of Mahajati Sadan,
Sisir Mancha, Vishwa Banga Sammelan & all other major
cultural events like the Haldia Utsav, Banga Sanskriti Sanmelan
etc. Critical acclaim from major personalities & all leading dailies
and magazines flowed in regularly and her strature grew as
a confident, mature and disciplined exponent. Invited
to Bangladesh in 1993, for some solo performances, she was
very successful and a Daily "Dhaka Daily Star" remarked
- "The young artist recently
enthralled the connoisseurs of Rabindra Sangeet with her exquisite
performance".
