Dr. Mumtaz Sanghamita who was born in 1946 in 2 Parks Road Burdwan hails from a renowned and cultured family of education and deep political roots. Her father Shri Sayyad Mansur Habibullah was well versed in politics, a legal luminary and a former legislator in West Bengal assembly, a farmer leader and a Law Minister.

Her Mother Smt. Maqsooda Khatoon was an educationist whose father was Railway Accountant General. Her mother not only actively participated in the women movement but was a founder member of West Bengal Women Self Defence Association.

Dr. Mumtaz Sanghamita’s initial schooling was done in Burdwan Municipal Girls School and her mother’s workplace being in Kolkata she had the opportunity to admit in the famous Brahmo Balika Bidyalay in Kolkata from where she passed out in first division securing letter in four subjects. After doing her Pre-Medical from Bethune College she completed her MBBS from Calcutta Medical College in 1968. This was followed by DGO in 1970 from Calcutta Universityand MD (OTG) from Delhi University. Apart from this she also pursued medical education in UK, specially in the field of ultra sound. In 1975 she married Shri Nurey Alam Chowdhury who had done his barristership from Lincolnstone and later became a Senior advocate of Kolkata High Court. Presently he is a Cabinet Minister. Their only daughter Dr. Shabana Rose who is an MBBS from National Medical College and is pursuing higher Medical research.

Dr. Mumtaz Sanghamita is a revered teacher and also specializes in the treatment of Women’s diseases. Dr. Mumtaz who started her medical career in West Bengal Health department with her first assignment In Jangipur after joining West Bengal Government Health Services Department. Later she was attached to Calcutta National Medical College, North Bengal Medical College and Calcutta Medical College. Dr. Mumtaz had discharged all her responsibilities with tremendous care and competency and her Area of specialization was as an expert on Women’s disease. She had handled various posts such as RMO, Lecturer, Asst Prof., Reader, Associate Professor and she finally retired from Calcutta Medical College as a Professor and head of Department in 2006. She also held the post of Consultant to Govt of India Health and Family Planning Department. Apart from this she is closely associated with a Delhi based Medical College as Adviser and Visiting Professor. Dr. Mumtaz Sanghomita’s name as an interesting Interpretation. Mumtaz as we all know was Emperor Sahjahan’s beloved wife and Sanghamita the daughter of Emperor Ashok and all the qualities in her namely of affection, love and above all a symbol of sacrifice. Dr. Mumtaz true to her name is highly involved in various committees and organizations.

She is the President of BOGS .She had the proud privilege to be the first woman secretary  and later became  the Chair person of Calcutta university institute.  These positions were held by such personalities like Shri Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar, Shri Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay, Shri Rabindra Nath Tagore and Shri Subhash Chandra Bose. She was also an Executive member of IMA Kolkata  and was Vice-President (Indian Society of Perinatology and Reproductive Biology) She is closely associated with several NGOs where she devotes her spare time and economic support. She worked a lot for welfare of Woman and Child development.It needs to be mentioned that she firmly believed in Women education and empowerment and strongly advocated against repression of women and female foeticide.

Her contribution in the field of education is immense. In Tollygunge she is the founder member and Trustee of Mansur Habibullah memorial School which is affiliated to ICSE board. In Birbhum in Nalhati South End School an English medium school is earning a lot of appreciation From the local populace and which is progressing under her guidance. She has successfully established girls college namely Asleha Girls College in which she is a secretary and Sophia Girls College. She has also taken care to provide computer education to the students. She with her own endeavour has also successfully provided an opportunity to complete their educationthrough IGNOU.

She has also involved herself in developments of temples and mosques in Murshidabad,Birbhum and Bardhaman. Her cultural disposition has found an outlet in the form of ‘Suragana’ a group that teaches song,dance and arts .Her constructive attitude,her untiring social service and her openness to all religions has made her an exceptional human being about whom we are truly grateful and proud.

  2. Trained in GynaecologicalLapairoscopy & Hyseroscopy in Delhi.
  3. Trained in Colposcopy.
  4. Master trainer of EMOC training & PPTCT.
