People belonging to various linguistic, religious, ethnic and cultural groups live in perfect amity in West Bengal. This is well reflected in the types of newspapers brought out from this State. Out of more than 600 newspaper published from West Bengal, nearly 50 dailies are brought out from Calcutta itself. Apart from 15 Bengali and 7 English dailies, 12 Hindi, 12 Urdu, 2 Punjabi and 2 Chinese dailies are published from Calcutta. Among weekly publications there is one each in Gujrati, Malaylam, Oriya, Punjabi and Tibetan Languages. 2 Rajasthani weeklies are also published from Calcutta. Among Calcutta-based English dailies, the Statesman, Telegraph, Asian Age deserve special mention. Ananda Bazar Patrika, Jugantar, Ganashaki, Aajkaal, Bartaman and Sambad Pratidin are widely circulated Bengali dailies. Some newly published Bengali dailies ( Dainik Basumuti and Uttar Banga Sambad) and one Hindi daily (Janpath Samachar) are brought out from Siliguri. One weekly in Nepali Language is also published from Siliguri. Besides, all the major national dailies have their local offices in Calcutta. Press Trust of India (P.T.I) and United News India (U.N.I.) the two major national news agencies also operate through their local offices in Calcutta. Two Union Government owned media. Akashbani and Doordarshan, also have there regional offices located in the city beside their centres in some parts of the State. |
