The Spiritual flood which was ushered in Dakshineswar Temple garden by Sri Ramakrishna brought the new Ramakrishna movement which took its first root in Baranagar monastery situated on the Eastern Bank of Ganga, near Calcutta. It was in late 1886. After nearly five years, in 1892 February this first monastery was shifted from Baranagar to Alambazar. It was a little before Shri Ramakrishna's birthday which was celebrated on 29th February, that year in the new Alambazar Math. The Homa birds of Sri Ramakrishna who left the Baranagar Math for pilgrimages, and were wandering in search of God all over India, finally began to gather in their new nest, their new place of rest and providence- the Alambazar Math. The call of their leader Swami Vivekananda made them realize that the days of individual wandering and passion for self realization must now be converted to a life of collective service for the welfare of many and good of many, for the "intense propagation" and practice of Sri Ramakrishna's life giving message, all over the world.

The new Math at Alambazar was situated on a land measuring 2 bighas and 22 square ft. of Land. There were also small ponds, a fruit garden and a well for drinking water inside Alambazar Math Campus. It was an old two storied building which stood imperiously on tall pillars facing the main road known as Deshbandhu Road. The address of the Math was 40, Deshbandhu Road, [now 95, Deshbandhu Road (west)]. The side entrance was later known as 60/1, Ramchandra Bagchi Lane.
