Platelets are blood cells vital for promoting clotting and stoppage of bleeding following cuts and injuries. Deficiency of Platelets can give rise to bleeding problems.
Immune Thrombocytopenia (ITP)
Immune Thrombocytopenia or ITP is a very common disorder where the body produces antibodies against it’s own Platelets. The antibody-coated platelets are destroyed in Spleen and other reticulo-endothelial organs. The patient presents with low platelet counts along with bleeding and bruising.
The disease can affect both sexes and can appear in all ages. Treatment options range from watchful expectancy, Steroids, IV Gammaglobulin, Rituximab, Cyclosporine, Dapsone, Azathioprine etc.
Immune Thrombocytopenia can be associated with Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C and HIV infections. It can also occur in the background of connective tissue disorders like SLE. |
