            | Thalassaemias and other genetic disorders involving Haemoglobin synthesis: These are genetic disorders involving defects in Haemoglobin formation and synthesis. Thalassaemia, HbE Disease and Sickle Cell disorders are very common in India. Thalassaemias again can be divided into Thalassaemia major which requires regular blood transfusions, Thalassaemia intermedia which requires occasional blood transfusions and Thalassaemia traits or carriers who require no transfusion at all. It is very important that two Thalassaemia carriers do not marry each other. Testing for Thalassaemia before marriage is far more important in India than comparing Horoscopes.

Thalassaemias  and Sickle cell disorders are usually managed with blood transfusions. Bone Marrow Transplantation can be used to cure severe forms of these disorders.
