Do chocolate cysts need surgery?
Chocolate cysts are common in women with endometriosis. Symptoms can often be managed with medication. In some cases, the cysts will need to be removed. According to a study, about 30 percent of surgically removed chocolate cysts will return, especially if they were large or medically treated.
How do you remove a chocolate cyst?
A laparoscope (a small, tube-shaped microscope with a light on the end) is passed into your abdomen so the surgeon can see your internal organs. The surgeon then removes the cyst through the small cuts in your skin. After the cyst has been removed, the cuts will be closed using dissolvable stitches.
Can chocolate cysts disappear?
If your chocolate cyst is part of the normal ovulation process, that is if it is a functional cyst filled with blood, then the cyst disappears with time as the blood is absorbed and the cyst collapses. This usually occurs over a period of 4-8 weeks and can be diagnosed on a repeat ultrasound.
Is a chocolate cyst painful?
Chocolate cyst is a condition that is commonly found in women of reproductive age. The symptoms of suspected chocolate cyst is nonspecific, in that they may be found in other conditions also. Usually, there will be chronic abdominal pain during menstruation and this will become more painful every month.
