In male persons commonest cause is genetic male pattern baldness or androgenic alopecia.
5-DHT (Dihydroxy testosterone) is the most important hormone in androgenic baldness.
Testosterone hormone by act of 5 alpha reductase enzyme converted into 5 DHT
and causes hair fall in particular pattern as described by Norwood.
The other important hormone is Androstenedione.
Normally it is thought that hair on the back of the scalp and two sides are permanent. |

In Female Estrogen play an important role in hair loss. During pregnancy large group of hair may grow in telogen phase and there may be hair fall after pregnancy which recovers later. Birth control oral medicines and medicines used in Gout, Arthritis, Depression, High Blood Pressure, Anti-cancer Chemotherapy may cause hair fall. Diseases of thyroid gland, malnutrition, anaemia and chronic stress causes hair fall. Diseases like high fever alopecia areata and trichotillomania causes loss of hair. |
